An expression of sentiment to former PM of Bhutan

Your Excellency Jigmi Yoezer Thinley,                                        Dated: 26th July, 2013

I hope Your Excellency, Aum and other family members are keeping well. I had waited till today to greet Your Excellency for the simple reason of waiting out the turmoil events.

It’s a beautiful Country we have with all the green valleys, hills, rivers and mountains. Temples, Chortens and monasteries adorn the landscape and people still believe that the flutter of mani flags will guide the spirit of the deceased and lungdar prayer flags will grace the fortune of the living. In a way life is rooted in such simplicity of faith. And yet at times we Bhutanese act viciously and thoughtlessly rush head long into disharmony.

I never really hoped for manna from heaven or feared sulfur from hell but I did believe in the goodness of our nation and broadness of our national outlook. At times like these, more than at other times, and especially at a senior age, one feels desperate in search of a meaningful sign that post a light of hope for better things to come. I have always yearned for stronger national footing and more control of our national destiny. As much as I am grateful to our giant neighbor India for all the assistance we have received, it was never my thought to seek more generosity and national steering from India.

Where did the precious gift of democracy go astray and what made people, institutions and political parties so hopelessly lose trust in each other and make possible Indian intervention with impunity in our General Election?

I suppose ardent supporters of both DPT and PDP would be tempted to divide Bhutanese into 2 groups but thankfully life of ordinary people can never be all politics because politics in a way is a luxury for most common Bhutanese struggling to etch out a decent living or for a youth seeking sustainable employment.
DPT has changed its opposition party leadership, so I suppose Your Excellency has decided to take a back seat. I am as yet, unsure, whether passive or active role would heal the social and political wounds the nation seemed to have suffered. But wounded as a nation we are today, otherwise: 1. There would not be a 15 point publicly declared election grievances submitted not to the Election Commission but to the Royal Person of His Majesty the King, relating directly to royal affiliated institutions such as Royal Bhutan Army and Royal Secretariat. Whatever the ground realities may have been during the heat of the Election, these submissions, as necessary as deemed, to point out flaws in election process, the procedure followed is nationally unpalatable and further deteriorates the post election status. 2. There would not have been rumors of an organized protest march to your residence which again is rumored to have been stopped by Royal Command thus unnecessarily fuelling speculations of social uncertainties and political aggression and 3. We would not now have a situation of compromised national sovereignty with India publicly toying with the sentiment of Bhutanese and national status of an economically weak Kingdom.

Not only as a citizen of the nation but as a born and bred Bhutanese totally beholden to the Kingdom and the Kings, all I pray for is a benevolent King overlooking the affairs of national sovereignty, security and welfare ( Kidu ) of all Bhutanese; a government that continues the development works and provide sustainable employment needs of the disengaged youth populace and; a continuous very friendly relation with India and a fruitful bilateral or multilateral co-operations with other nations including China.

There is no denying that Your Excellency, even as a member of opposition party or as an Ambassador of GNH a title conferred upon you or as a private citizen, does enjoy both national and international credentials. Please do not give up for whatever reasons but rather try harder to promote the interest of Tsa-wa-Sum. And as time passes by and present molten of political acrimonies cool off, please humbly and sincerely do all you can humanly possible, to clear any and all misunderstanding or deemed breach of Thadamtsi that seemed to have occurred, not necessarily with intent of plan but most possibly in the trial and error of seeking a way of balanced democratic governance in between the authority of the King and the aspirations of the people.

We need a stable and secure sovereign Kingdom for our children, grandchildren and their children and so on. A sovereign King need happy subjects and people need a just Monarch and reliable government under whatever nomenclature of systems. Therefore in the ultimate interest of generations of Bhutanese to come, all of us high, middle, low and young and old alike must find positive strength to build constructive and progressive society. This vision of one nation and one people must be our most vital constant political culture.
In the serenity of our beautiful natural landscapes, in the flutter of prayer flags, the pureness of tolerance in temples and mandirs and smiles of our innocent younger generations, I pray that all Bhutanese from farmers to monks, students to philosophers, civil servants to political leaders, traders and industrialists, royal and holy members and above all His Holiness the Je Khenpo and their Majesties the Kings and Queens of Bhutan find faith, solace and trust in our own goodness and in the goodness of the Kingdom as a nation for all Bhutanese.

Let us all find the moral strength and spiritual faith in the workings of the Pelden Drukpai Chhochong and Ka-sung. Pelden Drukpai Lha Gyelo!

I wish Your Excellency and your family happiness, peace and joyful hope. Respectfully Wangcha Sangey.

  1. The current Ambassador of India in Bhutan was posted in Nepal when Nepal was facing same situation like ours. India had dirty hands on Nepal and Sikkim. No matter who form the government of Bhutan...we as a Bhutanese need to be more careful.
Following is the link of sad story how sikkim was annexed. I dont want it to happen to my country... May The Protector Palden Drukpa bless this beautiful country.

  3. Dear Wangcha sangay,
Thank u for sharing ur concerns for HE JYT. I feel HE JYT had earned all possible credentials a man could get. there is nothing more for him to achieve and it would be unfair for us, the Bhutanese, to expect anything more from him.Yes, its sad to see him take a back seat in the parliament but i do no think he would just slumber away.. I am sure he ll provide his wisdom and experience in strengthening the democracy.

  4. I think Lyonchen and Aum will be fine, they have far better things to do in life than harp on an election lost owing to some mysterious/shady events. In regard to GNH, Ex Lyonchen must give up his role as it's Ambassador if indeed he has been officially conferred this title, as the past few years have been marked with serious allegations by PDP of HE misusing GNH to promote his own personal agendas. I am sure the government can appoint Karma Ura as the new Ambassador of GNH, after all he played a big role in undermining DPTs reelection bid.

In regard to his role as an opposition MP, maybe it would be best for HE to just view things quietly from the sidelines, why would anyone listen to him when they refused to do so for the past 5 years when DPT was in power. Many people talk about HE helping the democratic process and guiding the present government because of his past experience etc, however, never having been appreciated by the opposition during DPTs reign, it is very unlikely that he would be able to contribute positively to any discussions in the parliament, as whatever he says will be taken out of context by vested interest groups.

    1. This comment sounds like the grapes all gone sour. Well, I am sure five years hence the TT's supporter's will whine thus, if PDP loses the power...we all know dear-ji. This is life ....and five years from now which ever party comes to power I will be saying the same thing ..........for i will remain the way I am now...may be worse coz i have neither the connection nor the wealth like u.....so lets sing our own song and dance to own tune. Don't pretend to be the saint!

  5. Dear Anonymous

If I were you, I could not have resist to pay this impressions of you. A beach thoughts it is... When world leaders applauds the leadership of JYT, you the citizen of this country have least respect to the esteem leader of the Nation... Didn't you see under the leadership of JYT as right hand to HM, the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, Bhutan has heightened and reached this stage of development.?

Whatever criticisms PDP have on JYT it were solely for the purpose of gaining, garnering or wooing voters only. PPD's five years Opposition institution provides only negative criticisms. The twosome never point out good things done by the govt. which today you see with your own naked eyes. So if two-member opposition did not appreciate DPT's reign, 90 percent of the citizens and voters appreciated their term. If it weren't for voters appreciation do you think the voters will vote for the party????

And for GNH ambassadorship, more than you know about JYT, the govt. machinery knows more about him. They think only JYT can materialize the concept of GNH, not other whom you like Karma Ura... he can't equal JYT....

    1. Obviously you misunderstood my post, we all know that JYT will be a much larger than life personality than Karma Ura will ever dream of being. The problem is JYT was never appreciated when he was trying to promote Bhutan to the outside world, so it is only fair that someone else should spread the teachings of GNH, whether the other person can do a better job is besides the point.

Looks like you and I are on the same wave length as far as what we think of the PDP and Karma Ura are concerned, the only difference is, while you want JYT to continue as a GNH ambassador which is not even an official title, I would rather see him not doing it, for the simple reason, that, while people outside of Bhutan appreciated his contribution to this noble concept, PDP supporters always criticized him. So when a PDP government is in power, how do they go about allowing him to continue being the GNH Ambassador, after never being happy with his travels to spread GNH to the outside world.

You have spoken our minds. At the end what we need is a peaceful and happy country. Lets not get divided by the party we support...DPT or PDP...We hope and pray that our former PM will not take a backseat instead show the world as always a role model opposition. We wish his excellency Lyonchen Tshering Tobgay and his team all the best in leading our country forward. And like always we will always have faith in our monarchs and pray for the continued happiness of the country..Pelden Drukpa Lha Gyelo

  7. whatsoever, i want the powerful, rich and able people to lift the destitutes. in addition the Tsa-Wa-Sum must come first instead of their personal gains. Lip service till now has not changed the status of the innocent and the poors in bhutan because the able people with authority just gave lip service and did little but they lifted themselves leaving those poors. in the name of serving kings and the people, mostly they have gained. some even seems to have misused their authority cheating our kings and the people.
at present i see powerful trying to become more powerful and rich trying to become more richer.
the unemployed youth and poor can become dangerous to the nations.
i sincerely hope the new govt. will give the poor and the unemployed youths-the eyes to see, feet to stand, hands to do things better.......

  8. Hey Citizens of Bhutan..
I Humbly share the sentiments of Wangcha Sangay very strongly. I remember HE JYT working tirelessly for the future of Bhutan as young as 14 years old. HE JYT started his humbleness as zonal administrator to the PM of Bhutan under wise guidance of His Majesty The 4th King and enjoyed unprecedented peace and tranquility in the country. Now We see that 'gifted' bit tainted and disillusioned as far as the sources concerned. HE JYT strove for 'self reliant state 'in terms of economy and development. If all that allegations claimed is true, then Bhutan is treading nowhere.. HE JYT succeeded against all odds both from inside and out side because he won heart of the people by losing the election.. Best of luck to HE JYT , Aum and family..

    1. You do sound so delusional...intoxicated with JYT Whiskey. As far as I am concerned this guy betrayed K4's faith .....this guy is all so drunk with power-potion that he doesn't know when to say/think enough is enough...the guy's ego, greed and desire for power is limitless - just as DASHO Karma Ura's is.....These two guys are the most alive and dangerous persons to our country as of this moment. Period.

    2. What makes you say that ex Lyonchen is/was so power hungry and how did he betray K4s trust, in fact he has been a very humble servant of K4s and has served King and country with distinction for nearly 4 decades.

  10. There is no one quite like Lyonchen JYT and it is unlikely that anyone like him will emerge on the scene in the next 30 years. It is sad that after so many years of dedicated service to the nation and the Kings, he should be made to suffer such disgrace. But there is something you should all know. JYT is a leader and a strong one at that. He is not one to give up. Giving the post of the OL to Lyonpo Pema Gyamtsho is a good move. That shows his leadership qualities. Lyonchen JYT knows that if he does not participate in the Parliamentary proceedings, the country is in bigger problem than it already is in. Given that the elections have been so manipulated to give 2/3rds majority to the ruling party, JYT is acutely aware that even one vote less on the Opposition will cause irreparable damage to the legislative process.

Knowing full well that there are evil forces at work, he will not abandon the country to the whims of those who wish us harm.

I will ask you this: when you slip inside the blanket ready to sleep after switching off the lights...reflecting on how you tried ur best to support the party of ur choice (for whatever reasons only known to u alone)....what does your inner soul tell you? Does or did it second ur choice?

As far as I am concerned, PDP could turn out to be worse than how DPT were....but we are all here watching and should they behave the same we (excluding big business supporters) know how to send our msg. To be fair, lets give these so called "inexperienced n undeserving" lots a chance.

Its worth reading & sometimes getting deep into meaning of written thoughts is harming the PELDEN DRUK PA...its no point for bifurcate the nation into 2 parts DPT or PDP. Both will be either ruling or opposition on the land of DRUKYEL. So dear all think generalise not to individual. And even to our ex PM we would love to see you as guiding factor in the Parliament. Since you have experience and you should guide all(Both ruling & Opposition). That will definitely define you who you are. If you opt for resignation i guess world will define you as power thirst human. So lets come together and build DRUKYEL into a peaceful nation in this universe......

  16. Beautiful lines of a true Bhutanese! I think it is high time we forget the past and move on regardless of which political party you belong to or supported on 13 July 2013. The former PM JYT should also be urged by all to continue to play an active and constructive role. People should stop making personal attacks against his name. One thing we must never forget is he has served this nation and his beloved Kings for the last forty years with utmost dedication.

You should realize now that your very attitude has become the reason for your loss.

  20. Yes, there is no doubt that HE JYT has done his best, and his was a vision for a self reliant and sovereign Bhutan. We only wish that he plays a role is building and steering the alternative development philosophy (GNH) as the world needs it too. And i would also agree that K.Ura should now be the flag bearer of GNH as he, as we all know all too well, has been one of the champions and indeed the principal expert of this development philosophy. In this sense, I would hope and pray that he (KU) is not absorbed as a government SECRETARY, an area where is less popularly known.

  22. Now that enough reasons behind India's involvement in our last election have surfaced, she is likely to commit yet larger grants which will mean "nothing comes free". 'To take or not to take' will depend on how far the ruling government can see through the murky relation while China takes a vantage point to see through an eagle's eye. I am damn worried- TP Toffy

  23. Besides our Monarchs, JYT is undoubtedly the tallest leader this country has ever produced. I think his decision to resign is wise given the fact that others see him as a threat. His popularity chart over the years amongst international citizenry speaks volumes. The people who belittled him now surely will regret later. This country will miss his leadership. Thank you JYT and we wish you a happy retired life.

  24. Hail to JYT the greatest Leader and Statesmen this Nation had ever produced besides our Monarchs. I was disheartened and shattered when Bhutanomics branded him as Ngolop. Bhutanmoics did much harm to our society and which will pose a great threat to our stability in long run.Edgar Allan Poe states “Believe only half of what you see and nothing that you hear.” So fellow citizens let us not forget that this beautiful nations was founded by our forefathers with long battle fought and thousands of lives lost for its unification. Bhutanomics had crossed the limits and we must now exercise Chapter 22 of Penal Code of Bhutan.
The question is not about winning and losing. It is the rule of the game but Bhutanomics must be dragged to court. Thank you JYT for your unquestionable morals. We are proud of you.

    1. He is a ngolop. He allowed traitors in his party and he didn't immediately condemn those who wished short life to our kings who have put him on the same pedestal where he once stood. Nor did he publicly condemn such seditious act in the public domain. So he is implicit in such disrespectful act against our beloved monarchs.

After reading all about this man, I have now only concluded that this man is nothing but an opportunist who would take as much when in power and forsake everything if denied the opportunity to rule. What a shame?

  25. Friends & Countrymen, Let JYT resign in peace. He should have freedom to choose his own life.As for Parliament representation, lets go with Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa's (DNT)new times and new ideas with new team. Otherwise, it will not hold any meaning.

  26. It is very sad to see a brilliant career of a man of JYT's stature is slowly disappearing into oblivion. He is definitely not a perfect human being, so are we, but he definitely does not deserve this kind of personal attacks. Regardless, let us hope that he continues to guide his party members (14 MPs) to play a constructive role for the success of our fragile democracy in the service of our King, Country and the People. Long Live our beloved Kings.

  27. JYT worshipers are so oblivious of the fact that there is a good number of people who don't idolize him. He is just an ordinary man with whims and fancies. If I slap him, he will shoot me with a machine gun. His wants are unlimited. He wants all the comforts of life as much as he dreams. He doesn't wear tattered clothes and live a bare minimum life, but likes to see others wanting less to conform to the philosophy that he propounds and promulgates. All he can give is a an empty speech.

Sorry guys, I don't believe in worshiping an ordinary human being.

    ReplyDelete
  28. It's not about worshipping him or not. It's about thanking for his dynamic leadership that has taken our country to the next level. And he is neither Buddha that can tolerate slap nor a devil that will shoot. yes his wants of making Bhutan independent was unlimited. Bhutanese says "ta so waii drin len dhogthey gi jel" you guys are worst than horse.
By the way may god bless you HE JYT. You are best in the world at what you do.

    ReplyDelete
  29. What dynamic leadership? He was merely walking on the footsteps of our 4th King. He stayed and derailed from the path, and that is why he has paid the price. He was trusted by our kings to lead but he betrayed in the end.

People like you and your camp are so fixated DPT's win that you fail to see the larger interest of the nation. Just because you lost the election, you guys are so quick in defaming our beloved kings who have sacrificed so much for the country and the people. Thank god, you and your party didn't win. Otherwise, we would have to live another 5 years of hellish life with police all around to control the movement of our cars.

There are so many dynamic people in both the government and private realms. Why don't you thank them as well? Did you thank Wangcha Sangay for his marvelous initiatives while serving in various capacities in the government? I was expecting to at least see some notes of appreciation on his blog for wonderful things he did, but sadly everyone was so consumed about defending DPT and party interests.
